ISTE stands for International Society for Technology in Education. While browsing their website, it was easy to see the many benefits they offer to educators. Partnering with a professional association provides teachers with expert guidance stemming from standards based on research, numerous educational resources, ongoing training opportunities, professional support and community, and individualized coaching. ISTE members enjoy exclusive benefits, but even teachers who are not members can learn helpful information from their blog.
One blog post, “5 ways to evaluate educational apps for safety, quality, and equity,” gives teachers tips on how to ensure that the apps they use in the classroom are worthy of their time. Because class time is limited, teachers need to only use the apps that are going to enhance student learning, not hinder it. Every student can benefit from a teacher exercising discernment when it comes to deciding what programs to use in the classroom.
Another blog post, “All teachers should be ready to incorporate assistive tech,” provides teachers with practical steps to begin using assistive technology with students who need it. Students who require assistive technology can only benefit from it when their teachers are well-trained and know how to incorporate it properly in the classroom. This resource is helpful for teachers who are not yet experienced in assistive technology integration.
A third blog post is, “6 tools to spark a love of reading,” which gives teachers online resources for reading instruction. Teachers want their students to enjoy reading, but this is not always the case. Using sites like Goodreads, CommonLit, and ePals can motivate students to read and collaborate in reading activities.
At the 2024 ISTE EdTech Conference in Denver, CO, last summer, more than 15,000 people attended from all over the world in-person and online. There were over 2,000 presenters and 1,400 sessions over the course of three days.
There were numerous topics addressed, including AI use in the classroom, saving time with technology, teaching digital literacy, helping students take ownership of their learning as they use devices and programs, and much more.
As I looked through the titles of the sessions, several of them interested me. One session was called, “How can your self-efficacy impact your technology integration?” As a beginner to technology integration, I find this session topic interesting. My hope in attending would be that this session would help me gain confidence in my ability to use technology for the benefit of my students’ learning.
Another session was titled, “Centering Ethics and Equity in the AI Age.” I find this topic interesting because, although I want students to use technology to enhance their learning, I want them to use it in a safe and ethical manner. Technology should be used as a way to amplify learning, not as a way to bypass tasks that would improve critical thinking skills.
In conclusion, ISTE is a professional organization that offers educators valuable resources pertaining to technology integration. Interacting with all that ISTE has to offer helps teachers stay up-to-date on emerging technology and experience success in implementation.
